foreclosure law

We were early to warn readers that Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, who is heading the 50 state probe into mortgage abuses, was unlikely to take as tough a stand with banks as his early sabre-rattling suggested.

Now other close observers of the 50 state AG probe, like Marcy Wheeler of FireDogLake, have pointed out that expectations for this group were probably too high, given that some of the AGs had been opposed to the effort before, and they’d hobble the effort from the inside. But even though true, that observation still gives Miller more of an out than he deserves.

The fact is that Miller had decided, before any investigation was undertaken, that his group was not going to take any action that might allow investors to recover for losses. Why? Some of the parties in a position to recover would not be Americans. This came by e-mail before the December meeting at which Miller promised to “put people in jail” as well as obtain deep principal mods and compensation for defrauded homeowners:

The homeowners off to meet Tom Miller is a setup for a photo-op to imply buy-in. I was w/ a European documentary maker this weekend who spoke to Miller a few days ago and said Miller relayed the fraud isn’t so bad, everything will be worked out .. the standard line; he’s already made up his mind. He doesn’t want those European governments demanding their money back. The meeting is a photo-op setup because the too-big-to-fail crowd is scared of put-back liability and shorts; they’re working hard to make it appear they’re doing something to quiet everybody down.

So get this: so keen is a state attorney general to protect the wallets of big banks that he’s decided there wasn’t much fraud before doing any serious forensics. And his reason was to deny payouts to investors because they are foreign (China, are you taking notes?). But to prevent that outcome, he also has to throw US investors and wronged homeowners under the bus.

Welcome to equal protection under the law, circa 2011. No wonder gun sales are skyrocketing.

Thus Miller’s retreat is entirely predictable, and we can plot its trajectory. Following his “get tough with crime” mid-December declaration, Miller took criminal investigations off the table on January 4. From Bloomberg:

The five largest loan servicers, including Bank of America Corp. and JPMorgan Chase & Co., may be the first to settle with the 50 state attorneys general probing foreclosure practices, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said…..The group isn’t pursuing a criminal investigation, Miller said. “Our focus is to reform the servicing process and that’s inherently civil, not criminal,” he said.

One of our readers, who is a seasoned litigator, disagreed vehemently with Miller’s “this can only be a civil investigation” and provided examples of criminal prosecutions for analogous misconduct.

The latest step backwards by Miller is a softening in his stance and a refusal to reaffirm his earlier commitments. From Iowa CCI’s press release about its meeting yesterday with Miller:

Following their December 14th meeting with Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, who is leading the 50-state investigation of the “foreclosure-gate” scandal, 200 members of Iowa CCI met with him again on Tuesday to continue the push for a settlement that will help millions of Americans stay in their homes. Iowa CCI is part of a coalition of community groups across the country fighting to end the foreclosure crisis.

“Tuesday’s meeting felt a lot different than the meeting in December,” said Iowa CCI Director Hugh Espey, “In our first meeting with Attorney General Miller we felt like we had a champion that was ready to go toe to toe with the big banks. We left this meeting wondering if the big banks had knocked the wind out of our state’s top law enforcer.”

“In many cases a loan modification is in everybody’s best interest – the homeowner, the investor, servicer and the national economy,” Miller had said in a statement following the December meeting. “… I know it’s worth our best efforts to save as many homes as we can.”

In Tuesday’s meeting The Attorney General was less forthcoming about the intended outcome of the settlement. He did not repeat previous commitments to aim for a settlement that would keep people in their homes, nor to press criminal charges against bank officials where evidence of fraud and criminal wrongdoing is found. The Financial Crisis Commission has recently referred several cases to the states for further criminal investigation.

As more aggressive AGs, like the ones in Arizona and Nevada, file suits against banks, perhaps their complacent peers like Miller will be embarrassed into acting. But until then, this “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” by top enforcement officials appears likely to remain the norm.

Counterfeiting is an effective way to stimulate the economy, but the costs can be quite high.

For example, if trillions of dollars in fake cash was injected into the financial system (undetected), we'd probably see the same type of thing that we see when a credit bubble is inflating; asset prices would rise, unemployment would fall, economic activity would increase, and GDP would soar.

But when people figured out what was going on, investors would panic, the markets would crash, and the economy would go into a deflationary nosedive.

So here's the point: Deregulation allows the banks to create as much bogus money as they want in the form of credit. When a bank issues a loan to someone who can't repay the debt, it's counterfeiting, which is the same as stealing.

This is what the banks did in the lead-up to the Market Meltdown of '08; they issued trillions of dollars of mortgages to people who had no job, no income, no collateral, and a bad credit history. The banks abandoned all the standard criteria for issuing loans, so they could increase the quantity of loans they produced.

Why? Because bankers get paid on the front-end of the transaction, which means that when they make a loan, they mark it as a credit on their books so they can draw a hefty salary and a fat bonus at the end of the year. In other words, there are powerful incentives for bankers to do the wrong thing, which is why they act the way they do.

Now that the economy has begun to stabilize, there are signs that the whole process is starting over again and another bubble is already emerging. Check out this clip from an article in The Tennessean titled "Auto lenders approve more subprime borrowers":

"As the auto industry continues to make a slow recovery from tough times of the past two years, lenders are finally loosening credit restrictions and approving car loans for customers with less than prime credit ratings. In the third quarter last year, for instance, the share of new vehicle loans to "credit-challenged" consumers rose 12.7 percent compared with the same period in 2009, said Experian, one of the nation's major credit reporting agencies.

Loans to borrowers with subprime credit scores as low as 550 were among categories that grew the most....Credit restrictions were the biggest reason people stopped buying new cars during the recession, but "that's not a problem anymore," said Marty Horn, sales manager at Nashville's Crown Ford.

"We're not having any trouble finding financing for anyone with a score in the 600s," he said. "We can get most people financed through Ford Credit, and if that's not available, we have other lenders ready to step in."...

"We're seeing loans of up to 140 percent of value from some lenders, and Capital One is by far our best lender for the subprime customer, which is below a 620 score," said Michael Creque, general manager of Alexander Chevrolet-Cadillac in Murfreesboro." ("Auto lenders approve more subprime borrowers", The Tennessean)

Can you believe it? Auto finance companies are lending up to "140 percent of value" of the loan to "credit-challenged" consumers? And this is going on just two years after the biggest meltdown since the Great Depression.

Keep in mind, that the housing/credit bubble cost ordinary working people $12 trillion in lost retirement savings and home equity while the perpetrators on Wall Street have seen their profits skyrocket. Bubblenomics is not "innovation" and it certainly does not increase productivity. It merely transfers wealth from one class to another via credit manipulation.

Consider the recent reports about improvements in the economy. While it's true the data is looking better (retail sales, personal consumption, manufacturing, car sales etc) it's also true that the credit cancer is spreading again. Consumer demand is still weak because unemployment is nearly 10 percent and wages remain flat. So the only reason spending is up, is because credit is expanding. But that means more lending to people who are incapable of repaying their loans which will inevitably lead to another bust. Here's an excerpt from an article titled "Zero-down mortgages endure in rural areas" from bankrate.com which proves my point:

"The zero-down mortgage is still alive in the form of the USDA home loan....People buy houses without down payments or mortgage insurance under the Department of Agriculture's rural development housing program. The catch? The property must be in a designated rural area. The surprise? Some eligible properties are in places that most people would not consider rural....

The borrower pays an upfront guarantee fee of 3.5 percent of the loan amount, which most opt to roll into the loan. Under some first-time buyer programs, borrowers can have their closing costs paid....Unlike most low or no-down-payment loans, Defining points out, USDA loans do not require mortgage insurance...... USDA does not set a minimum credit score, and lender minimums vary." (bankrate.com)

So a mortgage applicant can purchase a home with no down payment, no mortgage insurance, and no minimum credit score from the USDA? What the heck is the USDA even doing in the real estate business? This is just a sneaky way of creating another asset bubble. It's just more counterfeiting.

Now take a look at this from torquenews.com. Same thing. It shows that the big auto manufacturers are jumping on board the credit bandwagon, too. Here's a clip:

"Major auto makers and dealers will start the day after Christmas by pushing their zero percent down deals and hopes toward more year-end car sales....TorqueNews' screening of five top U.S. and Japanese automakers' year-end offerings shows all of them having some type of zero down deals to attract more car shoppers....

The U.S. luxury automobiles are offered with zero down year-end sales deals. All of the GM's products on its website are offered at with zero percent down-payment. GMC has no monthly payment until spring and $1,500 total allowance if the shopper finances with Ally. The 0% APR apply to qualified buyers on any GMC...." (torquenews.com)

"Zero down"; Weeee! "No monthly payment until spring", Weeeee! "$1,500 total allowance if the shopper finances" with us; Weeeee! Free money, never pay, borrow your way to prosperity; Weeeeeeeeeeee!

Haven't we seen this movie before? Is Congress really so lazy and corrupt that they're willing to let the economy drop back into the shi**er just so some shifty bankster can buy a few more baubles at Tiffanys?

Then there's this from yesterday's news: Allstate vs. Bank of America. Allstate wants to get its money back from B of A on toxic mortgage-backed securities. Here's the drift from the LA Times:

"The case pits insurer Allstate against Bank of America and Countrywide, the giant mortgage lender that Bank of America bought in 2008. The suit claims that Countrywide misrepresented the risks posed by the bundles of mortgages it sold to investors such as Allstate, which sank $700 million into the securities from 2005 to 2007. After the housing bubble burst, the mortgages in those securities started defaulting at a torrid pace, causing the value of the securities to plummet.

.... A Bank of America spokesman suggested that Allstate was "a sophisticated investor....looking for someone to blame." But Allstate's examination of a sample of the mortgages in each bundle found that Countrywide's disclosures consistently understated such important indicators as the percentage of mortgages with low down payments or with no proof of the borrower's income (so-called liar loans). And by Allstate's analysis, Countrywide's disclosures weren't off by a little bit. For example, in 11 securities that were supposedly free of "underwater" mortgages, up to 14% of the loans turned out to be larger than the value of the house."

("Housing Shocks", editorial, Los Angeles Times)

The "sophisticated investor" defense is an excuse that fraudsters use when they've just ripped you off. They say, "I thought you were smarter than that. I thought you were a "sophisticated investor."...which just dumps a little salt in the wound.

The truth is, Countrywide clipped Allstate for $700 million in garbage loans and now claims that it procured the money "fair and square". Right. But they do have a point. In a system where there are no rules, anything goes. Allstate might lose their suit simply because the laws now mainly protect the interests of the predators rather than the victims. The banks are free to whip-up their junk debt-instruments (comprised of liar's loans etc) and peddle them to anyone who is gullible enough to invest their money. It's a con-game.

One last example. Many people have noticed that there was a slight uptick in credit in the Fed's latest report. That's good, right? But, as it turns out, the only area where credit really improved was student loans which grew about 80% year-over-year, or roughly $120 billion. So why the sudden and explosive growth in student loans? The answer appeared on an economics blog called benzinga.com via firedoglake. Here's an excerpt:

"The Federal Family Education Loan program (FFEL) allows private financial institutions to provide students with loans, but the government assumes the risk of default, and pays the financial fees while the student attends college. This amounts to privatized gains combined with socialized loans....

Under the FFEL program, financial institutions like Sallie Mae, Bank of America, National Education Loan Network, JPMorgan Chase, Wachovia, and Wells Fargo would originate these FFEL loans with students, and then sell them on the secondary credit market. In 2008, the credit market dried up, and the private lenders had nowhere to sell these government guaranteed loans. So, the government stepped in to buy up these loans and protect a program that was already a massively wasteful corporate boondoggle.

The bailout was authorized with HR 5715 Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act (ECASLA). The bill allowed for the Department of Eduction to produce three different programs, the Loan Purchase Commitment Program, the Loan Participation Purchase Program, and a buyer-of-last-resort Asset-Backed Commercial Paper Conduit.

This purchase program — which amounted to the department of education buying privately-originated student loans that were intended to be securitized but now could not be — was radically expanded in 2009 and 2010, with a purchase amount target of about (you guessed it) $120bn. ("The hidden message of the consumer credit release" )

So, there is no improvement in credit. Not really. It's just more backdoor bailouts that are dolled up to look like things are getting better. But things aren't getting better; we've simply restored the same crisis-prone wholesale credit system ("shadow banking") with trillions of dollars of government subsidies, bailouts, stimulus and guarantees, and now we are speeding towards the next big collision. That's not what I'd call "economic recovery". I'd call it stupidity.

Last we heard in October, the Department of Justice had prepared a flurry of subpoenas to delve into the handling of campaign finances in John Edwards’ presidential run, with a specific eye towards the use of some funds to keep the Rielle Hunter scandal under wraps.  Today, the Associated Press reports that the grand jury has targeted Edwards in its probe, and not just Edwards.  Subpoenas have been issued for Alliance For a New America (AFNA) and linked organizations, where millions of dollars got spent with no public accounting:

A federal criminal investigation targeting John Edwards is examining how much the two-time presidential candidate knew about money used to cover up his extramarital affair and out-of-wedlock child and whether he had other practices that pushed the bounds of campaign finance laws, people involved in the case have told The Associated Press.

A federal grand jury meeting in Raleigh, N.C., is combing through records and testimony involving several political organizations and individuals connected to Edwards and trying to determine if the former North Carolina senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee broke any laws. A recently issued subpoena focuses on a web of these political groups allied with Edwards, according to subpoena details provided to AP that offer a glimpse into the investigation being conducted behind closed doors.

The situation gets murky indeed when looking at AFNA:

Atop the subpoena list, read to the AP by someone with access to a subpoena, is the Alliance for a New America, which is what is known as a political 527 group, named for the tax code section that governs it. Also on the list is a like-named private entity called Alliance for a New America LLC, or AFNA LLC, and Edwards’ former campaign manager Nick Baldick, who ran the political 527 group in support of Edwards’ bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. (IRS records for the same groups refer to the groups as Alliance for New America, without an “a.”)

Baldick and his attorney Jim Lamb would not comment on the federal investigation, but Lamb said Baldick has been told he is not a target of it.

Federal records show that about $3.3 million of the $4.8 million raised by the 527 was distributed to AFNA LLC for unspecified “consulting services.” The 527 and the LLC shared not only their name, but the same Alexandria, Va., post office box and the same contact, a Baldick associate named Katherine Buchanan. A crucial difference between the two Alliance entities was that the LLC was a limited liability company that did not have to publicly disclose how its money was spent.

The question will be whether that distinction was legal on its face, or whether it was used as a dodge to funnel money illegally to Edwards for his own personal use.  If the grand jury can connect the expenditures on “consultants” to those who tried keeping the lid on Edwards’ relationship with Hunter, the legality of the edifice may be a moot point anyway.  Presumably, the grand jury and the investigators are looking for someone on the inside to testify to how the money got spent. If they do and the money got directed to hide Hunter and keep her quiet, then everyone involved may face conspiracy charges.

AFNA isn’t the only entity under scrutiny, either.  The One American Committee paid Hunter over $100,000 for campaign Internet videos that never got published.  They also want to see how massive contributions from Fred Baron and Bunny Mellon were distributed, the latter of which got hidden in boxes of chocolates according to former aide Andrew Young’s book with the express purpose of keeping Hunter quiet.  Baron claimed to have supported Hunter financially without Edwards’ knowledge, but Young’s book says that Edwards agreed to hit up Mellon for hush money, which the grand jury seems to think may be an interesting avenue of inquiry.

None of this means anything until the grand jury produces indictments, of course — but becoming a target of a grand jury is the one way that happens.

If Chrysler wanted a really good add, have the E-Trade toddler talk about buying shares of Chrysler stock, or looking forward to buying shares of Chrysler stock when they are openly traded again.

actually the brilliant thing about the e-trade baby thing is that since its all or mostly computer generated, you have to wonder if there is any concern about the baby growing up at all.

  4. 1. Was angry at the car companies for giving in to government cake and always found it interesting that Ford, the only big one who didn’t take Washington money, was also the only big one to keep posting a profit in the months after the bailouts. (Don’t know how they’re all doing now.)

    2. How was GM not able to keep making Saturns? It was one of their most popular cars IIUC (really miss my two – a bad driver totalled my last one last fall).

  5. BTW: for some reason I really like Eminem — he’s got great rapping talent (unlike the actual Vanilla Ice) – but he used his talent badly, and, along w/ others, coarsened the culture.

Never bought his albums or movie, just because I didn’t want to support that coarsening. But he is a good musician IMO.

  6. Good Point, AW. I imagine there was an original child scanned for the basis of the image, right?

If the maker’s of the ad use a computer generated image (based on the original picture) for an older child, does the child (or his trust fund) still have a financial interest? I would think so, or anybody could do a slight edit of a photo of someone and claim “but it’s not so and so”.

  7. Good post. Patriotism has always been a big part of Super Bowl commercials (lets not forget the John Cougar Mellancamp “My Country” ads, for example). And Chrysler has a specific problem worth addressing, I think – it was bought by Fiat! To the extent that’s a stumbling block to sales, it ought to be addressed in the commercials.

Personally, I thought that it was the best ad of the Super Bowl. Much better than the overhyped Volkswagen-Darth Vader ad (an ad about the *key*? really?).

Not to mention that Chrysler had to advertise in the Super Bowl when (almost literally) every single other car company in the country advertised on the same program. Not advertising would mean losing ground.

well, the rumor about killing saturn is that it had everything to do with their lack of unionization. its really hard to understand it, otherwise.

And yeah, i have liked that company from the beginning. I got one in 1998, a leftover on the lot from last year, so a 1997 SL1. that lasted me until two summers ago when the car was totaled in the moving day from hell. i mean seriously if it didn’t get hit by an idiot driver i would be driving it today.

and now i drive a 1995 Vue (their smaller SUV). and its running great.

btw, my wife was in the car in that accident. she had some minor neck injuries, but she has pretty much recovered. if you saw what the car looked like, though, you would be very impressed she wasn’t seriously hurt.

  9. Chryler should of been let to die the first time. Then( maybe ) Ford and GM would of been in better shape.

Chrysler can go now. We already have plenty of choice in the market place.

Frankly, I support foreign car makers now. They don’t get the government to assfist me to give them money. Let the Japanese, German and soon Chinese citizen get worked over, again and again, by their corporations government.

No domestic auto company means one less big, really big, corporate/union welfare teat sucker.

  11. Paul, also, Honda and Toyota PAY taxes to the US Government. They also pay their workers a very fair wage in places like Texas and Ohio.

Like Chrysler, they are not American owned, but they do have a lot of engineering and management in the USA.

I see them as better citizens than Chrysler. Unfortunately, Toyota and Honda don’t make a truck I really like, nor do they make cars like the Suburban or the Mustang.

Fortunately, Ford has me covered (the new Explorer is the only SUV that doesn’t look ridiculous to me, too). They are still union tainted, but they make a good product and I think their success relative to GM and Chrysler sends a message.

I really hope GM and Chrysler fail. Sure, that would mean all the bailout money was wasted, but if these companies succeed, those bailouts will be repeated over and over in other industries. Companies fail. We should let them, so new blood can succeed.

Anyway, I think the Chrysler commercial was ghastly and wonder about the mind of the person who thinks their cars are better because Eminem likes D-Town. At least GM, for all their many faults, sometimes shows some effort (like Volt or Camaro). Look at that Chrysler 200! It wouldn’t have turned heads ten years ago.

Very glad your wife was OK. That driver last fall hit me in such a way, in the driver’s side, that I should have been injured but not a scratch. (Seat belts help too, but those cars are sturdy.)

Have always felt about cars “don’t need any bells and whistles, just start up every single time and get me where I want to go with no breakdowns.” That’s why I was so loyal to Saturn. Can count on one hand the problems I had with those two cars in almost 20 yrs.

What’s funny is, bought the second one when the first was about 10 yrs old and I’d just gotten a new good job. “It’s getting old so I’ll play it safe so I can get to the new job w/ a new car.” Sold that Saturn locally in a private sale, and still see the woman on occasion, almost nine years later, driving my old car around town. *weeps*

  13. Car companies that have taken bailout money can indeed advertise.

And I can complain about it. And will.

    Comment by SPQR — 2/7/2011 @ 7:25 am

  14. Aaron, the mid 1990s Saturns were quite good, though noisy. Cheap, reliable American cars. I know one guy’s SL1 is over 300k miles.

the car company took a major turn for the worse when GM started rebadging Chevies with Saturn logos. The Saturn experiment worked, but the union bosses understood that meant their days were numbered if they didn’t kill it. GM kills a lot of their most interesting ideas (EV1).

There’s a lot of legacy and heritage in their company, and I had hoped some of their IP would be bought in bankruptcy. Some Aptera or Tesla style young company could take a stab at making Corvettes. It could have helped the economy quite a lot, I think.

Instead, GM won’t sell their Pontiac or Oldmobile IP because it’s obvious if someone began selling 442s and GTOs untainted by bailout and unions, GM would cease to be relevant to a lot of people.

  15. While I understand the temptation to compare Vanilla Ice to Eminem in the way you did, you really shouldn’t.

For all his faults – and he has many – Eminem is a *top notch* rapper, easily one of the best, and he remains one of the few musicians to make a *good* movie when trying to make the jump into film.

Vanilla Ice, on the other hand, was just awful.

  17. aphrael, you don’t seem to be willing to credit Vanilla Ice’s creativity as expressed in his current reality show … as a general contractor.

    Comment by SPQR — 2/7/2011 @ 7:39 am

  18. Yes, they can advertise, but I expect them to be a bit more frugal with their money. Chrysler paid for the longest Superbowl spot in history, and retained an expensive spoiled rap star to star in it. Only the rapper didn’t *rap*, you see, and he also starred in a silly cartoon soft drink commercial earlier in the game, so his gravitas is somewhat, um, questionable. You’ll have to excuse me if I see this as but an extension of their previous mismanagement.

    Comment by mcg — 2/7/2011 @ 7:42 am

  19. Eminem is driving a minivan in his rap commercial.

Come on. Sellout. I thought the rules were that we can mock him a lot now.

  20. well, the rumor about killing saturn is that it had everything to do with their lack of unionization. its really hard to understand it, otherwise.

It actually was unionized but the union boss at Saturn was really interested in new quality initiatives. This caused resentment in GM (not Chrysler) executives and the UAW president, Yokich, was not interested in cooperative ventures, He is remembered as the UAW president who built the country club for UAW executives.

The story is in “Crash Course.”

    Comment by Mike K — 2/7/2011 @ 7:48 am

  21. fwiw, Eminem is having a resurgence and is up for 10 Grammy Awards this year. Drug issues had him down for a few years. I haven’t paid attention to him since his big 2001 year but apparently he is blacker music-wise than many black rappers and can actually rhyme. Also he starred in 8 Mile with Kim Basinger playing his mom. He admits to taking pills he had no idea what they were at times, along with vicodin.

Comment by Calypso Louie Farrakhan — 2/7/2011 @ 7:52 am

  22. Eminem and Vanilla Ice? That is like comparing Scalia to timmah, or Clapton to Yelverton, or a normal non-obsessive human to epwj.

    Comment by JD — 2/7/2011 @ 7:59 am

  23. You know, I still remember how the Cutlass Supreme was a ridiculously obvious rip off of the Saturn SL1, even though Saturn wasn’t cooperating on design. GM simply ripped the hard work from Saturn and put the Olds out first. It wasn’t a rebadge, it was simply a lack of creativity.

And even though the Olds was bigger, had a more powerful motor, and a much more prestigious brand, the Saturn SL1 was a much bigger success because it was built better.

But that episode was a great example of how Saturn was constantly fighting uphill.

  24. SPQR – I know nothing about Vanilla Ice’s current tv show. I’m mostly out of the tv loop.

    Comment by aphrael — 2/7/2011 @ 8:18 am

  25. SPQR – I actually checked after I first saw an episode of The Vanilla Ice Project…

Seems that after we all thought he died (seriously, who here hadn’t thought he was dead?), he actually did end up flipping McMansions and the like in Miami.

My only problem is the fact that he apparently doesn’t use a lot of licensed trade-folks to do the work. I highly suspect the people doing the plumbing, for example, are actual plumbers.

Mike Holmes would have a heart attack.

    Comment by Scott Jacobs — 2/7/2011 @ 8:25 am

  26. I found it quite appropriate that Diego Rivera’s “Detroit Industry” was featured in this commercial. Rvera was a an outspoken communist which he reflected in his art and specifically in this fresco. Not really the best imagry to use for a company trying to convince the American public that it’s a solvent, self reliant business. Do you think the director was being sly?

    Comment by Jason Moss — 2/7/2011 @ 8:47 am

  27. Scott, Holmes has created a career out of having hissy fits.

    Comment by SPQR — 2/7/2011 @ 8:50 am

  28. Yeah, but it would be hard to argue that his hissy-fits aren’t justified.

Have you seen some of the stuff he’s had to fix?

The fact that he frequently goes out-of-pocket personally when doing a job is impressive to me. I think the line was “It isn’t unusually for him to have put in $50,000 by the end of a season – if he thinks that the kitchen would be vastly improved by custom cabinets, he’ll pay for them himself.”

Yeah, he can be a slight drama-queen, but for what he does, I’m willing to let that slide.

  29. Who watches sports events in real-time anymore? What % of viewers run the feed thru a DVR, wait 30 min, then watch the game but skip the commercials & other mindless downtime? Do the Nielsens audit this? What’s happened to rate cards over the past 5 yrs? Or are the media geniuses (& the clueless board members who enable them) stuck on 1995?

Run down into the ground by Democrats and now they are claiming the city is NOT what others who “have never even been here” have being saying for decades.

Yeesh. That place deserves to remain economically savaged.

  32. I sink Eminem stink. Chrysla stink too. Whez Bobby? Themz wuz da daze. Eminem is a peanut dipped in chocolate. Vuzzz is loos?

All kidding aside, the ad was stillborn. Eminem is dated goods. The ad was as enticing as the lame Black Eyed Peas. Why can’t we just have the Negro College bands play at halftime? All those white suits reminded me of the sperm cells in that old doofus Woody Allen movie about “Sex”.

There were so many government made car ads. And then the MVP gets that red pile of junk called a “Camaro”. Hell, give him a full restored Camaro muscle car. It was made during the era when GM didn’t stand for Government Made.

$100,000 per second for that tripe on American cars. The Euro car ads were just as stupid. Puff Doody? Are you kidding me? Looking helpless and ripped off. The boy has zero shame. Like President Zero. So glad I didnt have to see his mug at all yesterday. His face is a nightmare.

How many ribs did Moo-Chelle eat yesterday? Any red soda to wash it down? I hope she has the trots today. Go walk the Presidential Pooch.

  34. Yahoo has a list of the 20 most miserable cities in the US. Eight are in California. Miami would have been #1 instead of 2 if not for sun and no state income tax. Corruption beyond rampant. Of course plenty of northern liberal heavily black cities on list too. My own area is #8 despite the wealth, mostly because of unemployment and housing market still crashing. Funny I don’t see Arizona in the toilet in the same way. Few states are not going bankrupt. Unemployment very low in the Dakotas but who wants to freeze their asps off there?

Seems the Koreans are making top-quality cars now. GM has bigger sales in China than do in USA. I was thinking how the ouster of Gov. Gray did not guarantee improvement in Ca. government. Is that because of liberal unions, legislature and catering to Latinos? Auhnuld tried to get along with liberals but I expect Collyfournya got what it wanted. But then we are told W was responsible for the Housing mess and Barney,Dodd and Obama blameless. I wonder if that tomato picker in Ca. who made $14k a year still has his $750k house?

  35. I no longer root for GM’s or Chrysler’s success. I will never again buy a product from either of them under any circumstances.

I realize that this may be contrary to my indirect financial self-interest. The Obama administration turned them into corporate zombies, undead companies that aren’t allowed to die even though they really, really deserve to and that would be the best result for the American economy in the long term. The Obama administration trampled on the rule of law to reach that end.

So no, I will no more buy a GM car or a Chrysler car than I would have bought a Lada from the Soviet Union.

  36. Tagline should have been, by the way: “Imported from Detroit (but controlled from D.C.)”

    Comment by Beldar — 2/7/2011 @ 8:10 pm

  37. Agreed, Beldar. Never a GM or a Chrysler.

Though I’d be willing to buy a Ford.

    Comment by Scott Jacobs — 2/7/2011 @ 8:33 pm

  38. Whatever union and internal company politics may have had to do with the shutdown of Saturn, I think you’re overrating the brand. The extra safety of the early models was lost after the first few years, and from the Wikipedia page about the company, it seems the later models were really just Chevrolets or Opels with a different logo on the back. (Parts of that Wikipedia page seem frozen in amber.)

And I don’t think it was as popular as your anecdotes suggest. I can remember one neighbor on my whole street who ever bought a Saturn, and they eventually traded it in for a Honda Civic, which is parked next to a Toyota truck. They told me that Saturn was simply too pricey for their budget.

My parents, when I was a kid, stuck to Chevrolet–the ones I remember are my father’s Impala and my mother’s Nova. Eventually my mother switched to Mercury Cougars and then Toyota Camrys, and my father went for Buick because my stepmother worked for a dealership. I myself now drive a Corolla. It’s the fourth one in a row I’ve owned, and I’ll probably be trading it in sometime in the next twelve months for Corolla number five. The only complaint I have with the Corolla is that the brakes seem to wear out rather quickly. But that may be me. I drove it almost exclusively to work and on errands, and almost never more than an hour’s distance from the house–standard metropolitan traffic.

    Comment by kishnevi — 2/7/2011 @ 8:43 pm

  39. Yeah, I’m driving a 2000 Taurus made in Atlanta. It’s not nearly as much fun as the BMWs I used to drive, but I’m a more sedate driver now than I was then, and it’s been a pleasant, safe, and reliable car. When I replace it I’ll surely give Ford’s lineup a close look.

    Comment by Beldar — 2/7/2011 @ 8:43 pm

  40. I will always think of Nissan as my first love for cars.

My first car was an 1987 Nissan Sentra, and it only was gotten rid of because I treated it like crap. My fault, and a lesser car would have died way sooner than the 2+ years I owned it.

    Comment by Scott Jacobs — 2/7/2011 @ 8:46 pm

  41. I think the new Taurus is one of the best cars America has ever produced. It’s also sharp. Ford really has caught up with the other great automakers.

A car like that should be low hassle. One of the reasons Chrysler and GM failed was that their cars were often quite a hassle to keep on the road. I’ve only owned one Ford (my present vehicle), but it’s on par with the two Hondas we’ve had.

    Comment by Dustin — 2/7/2011 @ 8:48 pm

  42. From my grandfather down my family owned Impalas/Caprices for 40 years until they stopped making them. My mom (the little lady who drove it 2 miles to work and back every day) still has her 1989 Caprice. Trading in my 199-something caprice wagon was a mistake.

Just bought a Ford Focus today. Having a brother-in-law with the company helps get a better deal, as well as “inside scouting reports”. Even without that, though, I would still not buy GM or Chrysler. (FYI, the 2012 model year Focus will be coming out soon, so if you want a good deal more than the latest style, big incentives on the 2011 Focus.)

Best wishes on the car..may the wind be at your back and the traffic jams only on the other side of the highway….

I can’t say I intend to boycott GM because of the bailout. I boycott GM because of the lousy engineering they did. My first two cars were Chevy Cavaliers, and they had constant engine problems after the second year on each one. That was the main inducement to switch to Toyota. Much better in comparison (although the onboard computer in my current car seems to be getting finicky, but only after it hit the five year mark, past the time I usually trade in my cars (after five years I got a new one on the premise that engine problems were to be expected in a car that old. But not this year–combination of less income last year because of the recession and the recall hoo-has. Probably a new Corolla before the end of 2011, however.)

IDAPT is pretty keen on universal charging, but with its latest model there’s a dash of earth-friendliness in there too. The IDAPT i1 Eco boasts compatibility with over 4,000 devices – assisted by the fact that there’s a regular USB output on there – and automatically shuts off when your gadgets are rejuiced.

Two devices can be recharged simultaneously, and using IDAPT’s interchangeable IDAPT Tips the i1 Eco can handle Apple gadgets as well. In the box are three standard Tips – a 30-pin Apple dock connector, miniUSB and microUSB – while input options include 12V from your car or 100V-240V AC for travelling.

IDAPT expects the i1 Eco to go on sale in Q2 2011, and be priced at around €20.

impact on the environment.

Additionally, no chemical painting is used in manufacturing in order to

ease the process of future recycling.

Almost everyone who spends time on the internet has at some point searched for ways to make money. The internet offers millions of different ways to make some extra cash, but almost all of these are either frauds or just not worth your time. I have tested many of these sites across the internet and can share with you the most common problems and the top site out there.

When searching for sites that can help you make money on the internet, you are going to see countless sites where you can buy "the secrets" to making money. These "secrets" will always have some posted retail value of hundreds of dollars, and then they will have the discounted price you can pay. I have seen these prices range anywhere from $19.95 to a few hundred dollars. If the front page of a site is similar to what I have just described, avoid it. Most of these sites simply will take your money and give you links to other sites where you again have to pay. Some of these sites may give you legitimate help on making money on the internet by offering you links to good sites, but it is information you could find just as easy by doing an internet search.

While there are many sites that offer you a way of making money, a large majority are a waste of time because they offer you a maximum opportunity of brining in a few cents each day. In order to cash out, you have to have some high number in your account, which to reach you would have to be fulfilling their offers every day over the course of years. I have tried many of these sites, and it is never worth it.

My favorite site for making money on the internet is CashCrate ( http://tinyurl.com/h6zkt ). The first day I signed up for CashCrate in May 2006, I spent about an hour completing free offers they had posted on their site. After that hour, I already had over $15 in my account.

CashCrate offers you the opportunity to make free money. For most of the offers on the site, you do not need to pay anything or even have a credit card. If you are willing to pay a little bit or use your credit card, there are always some great offers with much higher amounts. However, it is easy to make a good amount of money by just completing all of the free offers.

They also offer you a chance to make money back on online purchases. Simply click on their "Go Shopping" option, and you will be able to see a list of online merchants that offer you a certain percentage of your purchase back.

My favorite part about making money on the internet with CashCrate is the way they pay you. As long as you have the minimum payout (usually $5, sometimes they raise it to $10) they pay you each month by sending a check in the mail. Cashing out is free and automatic. While these numbers may sound high on some sites, I have never had a problem going over these numbers even in an hour of time. The site offers so many different free chances to make money that it should be easy for anyone to bring in the extra cash.

To sign-up for free for the site, click here to go to the homepage ( http://tinyurl.com/h6zkt ). Once at the homepage, you can register right there. After you are done registering, you can enter the members' area, and start making money!
